Technologist, software engineer, systems architect
Educated at the University of Johannesburg, Ed is currently studying towards his Masters in Systems Engineering at the University of Stellenbosch.
He started his career at NuPayment Solutions, a service provider to the microfinance industry, where he worked in the technical department whereafter he was appointed as a junior software developer. This provided Ed with invaluable insight into the business world giving him a holistic overview of how business works, from the technical requirements through to customer needs and writing code.
After four years at NuPayment Solutions, Ed left the company to go live and work in London. Following a two-year stint at an international software development company, he returned to South Africa and took up a new position in Altech - that of a systems integration specialist. During this time, he was involved in the creation and inception of Terminal Cloud Control (TCC) - a system that drove point of sale terminals from the cloud instead using of local device-based software. This was an industry first, and resulted in the registration of a patent - one of two patents in the fintech space Ed is named as inventor on. By this time a team leader, he also became heavily involved in the R&D aspect of the development department, which involved the conceptualization, building and taking to market of products. This degree of innovation allowed for ground-breaking products that hadn't been seen in the industry before, helping the company to retain its market share by providing customers with the bespoke solutions that they required.
Five years after starting at Altech, Ed left the corporate world to become involved in development start-up Empire State. Excited by the challenge of leading a development house, and eager to create his own systems, processes and best practices, he took up the role of chief technology officer in April 2015 whereafter he was appointed as CEO.
Shortly thereafter, The Digital Academy was launched - a fast-track internship programme identifying and up-skilling 126 young developers over a 12-month period. Ed joined this venture as the technical manager, responsible for the journey of the interns as a whole, from intake to completion. He is responsible for the curriculum, giving talks and workshops, and providing guidance when necessary.
Ed is responsible for programming integrity of the GolfPlayed.com App and contributes to the decision-making of the business on a strategic level.
